Getting PHP to work with mySQL

I am trying to setup a forum site using phpBB. I installed IIS and PHP and both are working fine. I tested it using phpinfo() and everything comes up fine. Then I had to install mysql (new grounds for me). It seems to be installed just fine and I can make databases and users for the databases and what not, but I can't get PHP to work with mysql.

I don't know what I have to reconfigure or add to the php.ini file to get mysql to work. The error I get when I try installing phpBB is "The PHP configuration on your server doesn't support the database type that you chose". I've looked up this error and it pointed me the direction of the php.ini file....but I just don't know what to add to it to make it work.

I'd appreciate any help or direction. Thanks.

You'd have to compile PHP with MySQL support.

I have no idea how to do that, but I'm set with XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html).
