anyone know of a good place to find work online? i've seen some stuff, but apart from elance (that isn't free) there don't seem any real opportunities ...

I get mine by getting offline and walking around places and asking if anyone wants a site :p

I posted to that thread but I have only done 3 sites, 2 of those were through school friends whose parents owned the business and the other was just a mates site.
But I have 12 businesses waiting for me to register my business name so that I can trade with them as I offer almost 50% less then my competitors who are just crap anyway.
They way I got these businesses hooked was got a laptop got a suit made up some flash and html work with some extraordinary graphics and whent walking around to all the businesses I could in the holidays, I had a talk with the guys in charge showed em' my stuff designed to make em' WOW! and gave my card out to show I meant business.
Once they got over the shock of the fact I'm 15 and have the same business skills as them they decided that I was going to be the most cost effective choice in the long run.
Oh yeah, my flash presentation contained animated graphs. Just to give a technical side to it to show what sought of market share they were most likely loosing out on.
But this Christmas I'm going to put a glossy flyer in every big business's mail box..

Not all of the businesses though, I only signed up 12 out of 18.
You have just got to get out there and show what you can do, don't let them come to you, go to them.
They most likely don't know what they are looking for, you have to show them. Online just won't cut it, think about it if you were corressponding with a designer over the net and one day some weird lookin' guy walks into your shop and says he want's to design your site cheaper and better who would you choose?
I would choose the guy I can talk to face to face and know he isn't going to take my money and not do anything.

hey ASAAKI, I'm 18 too, and I have to say the best way to get a job is through contacts. Word of mouth has gotten me a job w/ my town, and 3 really big jobs lined up right now... no advertising, no talking to anyone. I do a good job for a friend in the business community, and word gets around...
If you really want to sit in your room and do nothing, find a partner, like a graphics/flash person who is really personable, and make them do all the liaison work while you sit at home and code. This is my personal tactic, and although I don't make as much money, I don't really care... I mostly write pages for fun, and a few Gs on the side every once in a while never hurts hehe :)

maybe if you're TOTALLY against moving out of your room you could search a list of business sites in your area, find one that sucks and email them with a "hey, your site sucks... wanna pay me to make it better?"
;) Actually I tried that one... I think I got a "yea we know our site sucks, we don't have any money. go away" response heh

the few websites i have made have all been because ive approached poeple i know, now ive found that they've recommeneded me to others... and so on and so forth (hopefully ;)). what mhtml says is pretty much right. i'm 14 and the only way for me to get websites to make for poeple is to prove that I can do it as well as a "pro" asking twice as much... which generally involves going offline and showing people...
