When to choose MySQL ?

Maybe idiot questions cos it's newbie questions.
Let me ask.

I have various types of files in so many directories in my server.
The files are at various length and all binary files.

Can I store them in MySQL database without placing them at server directory?

Leave them where they are and save the path to each file in mysql.
