Any recommendations on the best free ftp software out there? Preferably with drag and drop interface.
I've tried smartFTP but didnt like it, WS_FTP hasnt been updated in about 5 years I dont think, ACE FTP makes you install a crappy spyware toolbar AND register on their website.

I've never used it, but I know of filezilla.

Although it might be a little old WS_FTP_LE does the job for me... :)

Not me, its clunky, dated and doesnt drag and drop folders.

Filezilla is OK but too slow since it reconnects every time I upload a file. Very frustrating when doing a lot of small tweaks. No matter what I set the timeout to (currently at 999) it disconnects in the time it takes to write a single line of css.

For a mac, you could use fetch. But not for windows
Or FTP explorer, but it look quite old fashioned.

You can use IE to upload via FTP and drag and drop folders...

Double check your settings, it shouldn't do that.

Ick, I'd only suggest that as a very last resort.

Double and triple checked, set to send commands every 15 seconds to keep the connection alive and timeout set to 999. :(

Its really frustrating, its an unbelievable slowdown when you have to reconnect every few seconds.

Do you have that problem with any other FTP clients? If that is the case maybe the server is set to have a very short timeout period.

yes and no, I cant keep a persistant connection with cuteftp (tbh not messed with the settings there) but smart ftp can keep alive all day, pretty much. Cuteftp isnt this bad, its like literally, the time it takes to write 1 line of code and the connection is dropped.

Grr, it even does it while I'm doing stuff. I was navigating the directory trees on the server to get to the file I wanted and when I tried to download it had to f'ing reconnect.

Maybe this should be our 'senior' project - a decent, free ftp client ;)

Filezilla is a good one and it is free. You can download it for free if you do a search on Google. WS FTP is no longer a free program.

Weird, maybe try have it send every like 5 seconds instead of 15.

I've tried smartFTP but didnt like it Oh? Pity, since that would be my first suggestion.
I use it a lot and really like it; I drag and drop my files all over the place, connection is nice and stable, the interface requires a little getting used to but works well. All in all, it hasn't let me down sofar.

What is that you dislike about it?

tbh, I dont remember. I just remember I tried it a while back and it wasnt to my linking, might have beeen to do with dragiing and dropping folders - I'm not sure - I know a guy at work uses it and he doesnt like it much either but we pretty much exclusively use free software at work. (except fireworks and photoshop)

Same here, SmartFTP is an awesome FTP client IMHO, and the latest release looks great with the gradient tabs and overall layout. Small detail, but I especially like being able to close tabs with a center mouse click.
