View Full Version : need help to make a humour site
Hi. Im a newbie here and a newbie in making a website. I want to make a humour site (i.e. www.ebaumsworld.com)but have no idea on how to start it with. I kind of need some clear step by step guide on what i need to do besides making/encoding it in frontpage. btw, I have frontpage preloaded in my laptop when I bought it so I would be using it. I will also be getting FTP server. Im thingking of Filezilla as it is free. I believe the hosting co. that I need should support frontpage 2003 in my case right? heres a sample of what i need (if possible):
Step 1: Buy Domain
2. Get Hosting Co.
3. Etc.
4. Etc.
I have been surfing around the web but honestly I didnt get all the answers until I saw this website. If anyone could suggest a hosting co. for me. A cheap one to start off with. I would be uploading many video clips so i would probably need an ample amount of disk space(probaby 12gb is a good start?). Also I saw Yahoo! Small business accounts that will give you about 500gb of bandwidth. Is that enough?I kind of need a cheap one to start of with but I dont know if that is enough if I would be offering streaming videos? I also have thought of hosting my own server through my old computer. Its a laptop with Pentium III 700Mhz, 512mb RAM. Is that fast enough computer?I also have a comcast cable internet. But as we all know, cable internet flactuates dramatically during peak hours. I saw this site for that www.no-ip.com . As of now, thats only the information I know about making a website.
Any help would be great. Thank you.

Your comcast cable connection more than likely doesn't have a fast enough upstream to support a site of that nature. You are going to need to use 3rd party hosting instead.

Right,
1. Web Hosting, I was recommended this host http://www.crisphosting.net/ I think that it's quite cheap and with the £8 package, you get unlimited everything, space, bandwidth etc. (You can also get a domain with them.). But I'm not sure if they support frontpage.
EDIT: If you want some more web hosts try these threads:

2. As for making the web page, you could use something like Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver,
OR
You could code it yourself. Try some basic tutorials in things like HTML and CSS for a basic page. You could go onto something like php to develop your site. Try Something like this http://www.w3schools.com/ for some beginner tutorials.
3. FTP. I think that whatever program you use it will still have the same effect. (free is often good though!)
Hope this helps,
Thanks for the reply guys. I have checked the http://www.crisphosting.net/ and I think I like the unlimited all package. Btw, I think I saw on the features of crisphosting.net that they support frontpage, but I will still email them to be sure. Just one more question though, I have noticed that Frontpage and Dreamweaver are most used, right? What would you suggest to use for a total beginners like me. As I saw on Yahoo, the Hosting package supports only Frontpage 2000 and 2002. So that gives me the idea that many hosting company do not support frontpage (or atleast some versions of it). I have also read somewhere that dreamweaver is not really for begginers. I want to know what program is best for me before I buy one so I wont waste money on a program I cant use, atleast for now. Thanks.

I don't know of the hosting company you mention.
- as a rule unlimited= v.bad idea somewhere along the line.
It's always a good idea to see what others think.
try www.webhostingtalk.com
there is a forum dedicated to hosting offers where you should be able to find what you're looking for

Erm... Dreamweaver is actually quite easy to use. I guess it depend on customers. If you by any chance has anyone still selling or owning a Dreamweaver version 2.0. I would recommend buying from them, as the basic tutorials that came with it was very good for beginners. I still keep & install this version on my older platforms.
Try checkout coffecup program. Popular among the bloggers i knew. A very old and established company too.

Frontpage is a terrible, terrible program. Please, it's been done to death here, but don't use it. You'll get along fine as a beginner but later you'll regret it.
More to the point, as a beginner why do you 'have' to make a humour site? If it's really that imperative, why don't you pay to get someone who knows what they're doing? No offence but it's unlikely that any beginner is going to be able to make a fully functional website in a reasonable amount of time, especially one that includes videos, and likely sign ups and so on.
I would also be very wary of unlimited hosting. You can start small, you are going to get pretty much nothing in the way of traffic to begin with anyway, and unless you are clued up on web promotion and/or have some incredibly new and interesting idea (which by the sounds of it you don't) that won't change anytime.
Also, DW, like most other programs that will colour code your markup and give you code hints, is great for beginners, as long as you use it wisely and avoid design mode.
The reason why I am making a website, mainly to begin a new hobby and have a past time while waiting for my girlfriend to go online as we currently have been on a long distance relationship this past months. And another is to earn a little extra income. Well, as for the humour site, I have spent a lot of days, actually almost a month now, thinking what kind of website I will make. But being so fond of humour sites,I thought of starting my own. But never did I think that it will be that hard. Im not in a very much hurry that to publish my site, so I believe I can take my time to learn the basics. As for the Dreamweaver, I went to their website and my eyes almost popped out when I saw how much it was. In that case, Ill be asking my friends/relatives if the have dreamweaver and probably try theirs out first.
Thanks for all the help guys...

Try coding it. All you need is a browser and a simple text editor like notepad. Go to google and search for HTML and CSS tutorials.
thanks for all the help. I think i got all the answers I need. As ttttt said, ill check the w3schools.com for tutorial.
