A computer server would be a machine providing a service onto a network of computers. One server could provide only one service or several depending on its purpose.

ah i see and this 'service' could this include storing data and other such information to be shared among a network of computers ?

Yes..any service that is running on a computer that serves data to network clients warrants the computer to be called a server. For instance at home I have about 8 computers - my LAN server however is the only computer that I can call a server 'cause it's running Active Directory, Apache/PHP/mySQL etc...

ah i see and these programs that you are running on your computer are giving other pc's on the network the access to those programs as well ??

Yeah any of the computers on my network can access it to run web scripts and stuff off there..I use it for testing stuff really. I set up Active Directory to have a play with it 'cause I *NEED* to expand what I know of it.
