I was just wondering what people thought about phpbb forums.
Could anyone please give some feedback, thanks!?!

I haven't looked at the latest release, but previous versions were far less secure than payware boards such as vBulletin and Invision Power Board.

But do you have to pay for the other forums?

Yes, hence why they are "payware"; there are other free forum packages out there other than phpbb though I believe.

Comparision of Internet Forum Software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software)
Just a bit of information about all the "well-known" forum software available.
I have used phpBB and never been attacked by anyone other then Spambots as long as you stay up to date.

Thanks for the link.
So is phpbb particularly insecure, or just not as secure?

phpBB is secure as long as you stay up to date just the same as any software at all whether it be Open Source of Closed Source

Thanks. So the updates are for security and not for anything else (like new interfaces)?

The updates are for various issues from security to fixes to changes in setups and configurations.
Here (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=380687) is the link to the last post about the latest update for phpBB. As you can see, included in the update are [Fix]es, [Sec]urity updates, and [Change]'s to default configurations.
