View Full Version : firewire trouble

Hi, I have a JVC GR-DV800US DV video camera, It uses a USB connection, to transfer images on the SD card, while the Ilink is supposed to copy the tapes. I also just bought a brand new firewire pci card to copy the videos. Now, the problem is that when I plug in the camera through firewire, and power it on, the computer does nothing to recognize it. I've checked the owner manual to the camera, and it says just plug it in and XP should recognize it, and there are no drivers that come with it,

Did you install the drivers for your firewire card? If you right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Click the hardware tab, then click the device manager button, do you see any yellow bubbles next to any devices?

Do you have any other fireware devices you can test? What type of firewire card did you get? Is it for a laptop? Did it come with any type of power supply?

I have a DVD player, with a DV in port which I plugged in to see what it would do, and it recognized it, installed it, but I dont think its made to do anything with the computer, only with a camera. It is a Creative I/O card, and no, its for a pc, and no, no external power supply

The camera has worked before, on a different system

i'm having the same problem. DV cam works on USB, (but only for webcam and digital pics), but the PC won't see it when it's plugged into firewire. The camera sees that it's connected to firewire (it shows DV on the camcorder screen when it's plugged in).
What can I do? It's a Samsung SC-D353 ... Do I need some sort of extra software to install so I can capture the video or what?

this is from JVC support:
Can I transfer Moving Video from my camera to my PC?
You will need third party hardware and software in order to transfer moving video from your camera to your PC. Depending on what camera you have, a few different options are available to you. For more information on IEEE 1394 connectors locate the websites of manufacturers of this hardware. The following manufacturers firewire products were tested with JVC camcorders: Pinnacle Systems, Belkin, Orange Micro, Digital Origin, Ratoc . Please be advised that compatibility of JVC camera with firewire card may also depends on your particular computer specifications/hardware settings. Even though we tested the above hardware and bundled software there will be always exceptions and JVC doesn’t guarantee that computer, firewire card and JVC camcorder will interface flawlessly in everybody case.
So basically, what you need is software. Is just like a cellphone: Getting a data cable for the cellphone that connects to USB port wont help you transfer ringtones if you don't buy a third party software.

Ah forgot to mention, make sure a memory card is inside the camcorder, I think i read something about it not working without one.
