Hi, i am about to put my server on the web and i wanted to make sure that it is very secure. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can find out whats secure and whats not? Maybe a scan or something? Im using Slackware 10.2 linux.
Thx:)
you can try pinging your IP, and using nmap. If either of those can get through ie ping returns actual data instead of "timing out" then you should probably look into it more. The basics would be to check and see which ports you have open/need open in order to operate your server and from there you can close the ones you do not need. You should also monitor the server access logs for your site/ ie the port logs and watch to see if youre getting scanned etc.
This is a basic online test that you can run:

And yes you can run it remotely, like you would use wget to download something onto your server from the web without having to actually be at your server/ downloading at your computer at home then uploading to the server.

Check out some of these test. Especially SHIELDS UP!

The best way of course would be to hire a cracker to attempt to hack into your system ;)
but yeah Shields up is a dang fine utility.
