what i want to do is that i have my server up nd running, then i connect to on port 80 using windows telnet and then i type in

get / http/1.1 index.html

this is supposed to return index.html to the screen (as in html tags ad all just printed or "echoed" out to the telnet window) but it doesnt. can someone tell me what the correct syntax is to get the desired effect

I'm still confused. Are you wanting to open the HTML file in a text editor by telneting into your server?

What kind of platform is the server?

ill tell you what i want to do really so youll understand better. using the fsockopen() function in PHP i want to connect to say www.microsoft.com and get what it sends back to me IE index.asp or .html or .php or whatever. but to get that back from the server i need to make a "get" command to get that page. i am using telnet just to see what the command is before making my script. it would be like programming a browser really, making a connection to a web page

Did you try:
more filename.html
more path/to/file.html?
It shows the code of your page. But what's the point?
