when i log on to windows xp a windows file called system 32 loads up
which is really annoying.
how can i stop this happening?

That's not a file thats just explorer...
Open up msconfig and see what's being loaded at startup.

That shouldn't open when you log on. As Mark said, open msconfig and see what programs are being started when your computer is being started up. I reckon you got malware on there, but that's just a long shot.

Click on Start>Run>
Type msconfig in the box and press <Enter>
Select the "Startup" tab
Look for anything that references System32, if so, uncheck the box next to it
Click Apply and close the window then reboot when asked
If this does not apply check in Start>Run>Programs>Startup for any extra items as sometimes these do not appear in the msconfig program
Failing this I would recommend getting a clearer screen shot preferably one showing EVERYthing on the Startup and Services tabs of msconfig so we can go from there
