Round 2: Linux + Ethernet (wont work)

Some of you may remember a while back I was unable to get my wireless network card working with Fedora Core 4. Well today I have installed Ubuntu linux and am now using my on-board Ethernet adapter, I can connect to the internet to some degree but its a bit odd, heres whats happening (in firefox):

I try to connect to www.codingforums.com
I get Looking Up, then "Connecting" and it stays at connecting forever
I stop the page loading
Go Into network tools and Ping www.codingforums.com
I try to connect to www.codingforums.com
It loads

Ive been able to connect to a fair few sites (not all) if I ping them first. But obviously, I dont want to ping a site every time I want to access it. I couldn't at any point get onto google.

Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem using debian and it resulted in having to reset the eeprom on my net-card :eek:.:mad: (the card did not know what speed and duplex setting it was using)

the commands you need are ifup, ifdown, mii-tool, and there might be a command thats specific to your network adaptor, in my case a via tech card, the command was via-diag. These commands may not be installed on your system and should be used with the utmost caution once installed.

i think there is a linux howto on this, if not its a well known issue and entering "network-card ubuntu" or "network-card debian" in a search engine will bring up a lot more information.
