View Full Version : Can personal font files be uploaded and used as Dyanmic Fonts???

I hope this is the right forum to ask this question. I've done searches on the other forums here on CF and know one "seems" to have brought this up yet... so here goes...
Does any one know if this is even possible: to convert the font files included with my IE to some kind of format that can then be uploaded and then used on my website as "dynamically loaded fonts" which will load for any visitors' browsers (including Netscape) which don't already have those fonts built in? I'm familiar with TrueDoc's website for dynamic fonts, but they don't seem to support the fonts I want to use, specifically Forte and Britannic Bold. From what I can tell, they just have Snowcapped fonts, Woodplank fonts, and other cheesy type fonts. I know Forte and Britannic Bold aren't too exotic, but Netscape 4.x doesn't even seem to come loaded with them.
Or, does any one know of a good free-to-download program with the capability to import fonts (again, say, from IE's TTF files) that can then be uploaded as dynamic fonts to be used on a website?

Its possible, but be careful because visitors will be forced to wait for the font to load before they can get around your site.

you could type out "AaBbCcDd..." in the font into your graphics editor of choice and cut each letter into a .gif... which would get undo the need for the ugly and annoying forced download box.. although i would describe that in one word: "ouch"

Good idea...:D
Or just make the words you're going to use into a small gif :)

to the best of my knowledge, there's no way to get it to work in both browsers, without using more javascript than it's worth. there's a way to load fonts in IE, and a way to do it in NS, but neither way works in the other browser, so you have to set up a browser detect for that, and you're still not in the clear, 'cause i'm pretty sure that only IE and NS support loading fonts.

Ok, I'm slowly getting somewhere with this. But now, I encountered a minor (I hope) obstacle and I'm stuck... that is... creating (or finding somewhere online) the PFR files for the fonts I want to use. I know of 2 companies that make font authoring tools that can convert or create PFR files (by the way, PFR means "Portable Font Resource"), and those 2 companies are Bitstream that makes "WebFont Maker" and "WebFont Wizard", and HexMac that makes "Web Typograph 2.0". However, Bistream has discontinued both of those tools and they no longer can be downloaded from ANYWHERE!!! And, every single link that leads to HexMac brings up a password authorization that blocks any entry to their company site... weird!!! And those 2 companies are the ONLY ones that I could find that make this kind of software.
So, does ANYONE on this forum know how (or where) I can get a PFR file for Britannic Bold???? I think I lucked out finding one for Forte, but Britannic Bold's PFR still eludes me.

Click here to learn how to do it..........
Weft From Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/embedding/weft3/default.htm)
Not sure how it functions with other browsers though.
It's a utility program that sets it all up for you!

i've used weft. not only did it not work for me, it erased the pages i was trying to use it on. thank god i thought ahead and backed up my site before i used it. and, supposing it did work, it would only work with IE.
and again, as far as i know, PFR's aren't cross browser either.

and on top of everything else: Netscape 6 and recent Mozilla do not support dynamic fonts, and I believe Opera doesn't either.
FWIW...
