They're often called nice URIs or search-engine-friendly URIs and are usually achieved using mod_rewrite on an Apache server.

The processing instructions are written as regular expressions in your folder's .htaccess file.

Doing a search on any of the terms in italics will get you useful results.
Not treating forum messages like SMSs or Instant Messenger will get you more help from members.

Here is a good tutorial on mod_rewrite
http://forums.devshed.com/apache-development-15/mod-rewrite-guide-common-requests-267522.html

You could also give this a try
http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/mod_rewrite-rewriterule-generator.shtml
It may work.

They're often called nice URIs or search-engine-friendly URIs ... or Cruft-free URLs (http://www.google.com/search?ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&q=cruft+free+urls&btnG=Google+Search)... :D
