What is the best way for me to give my users the ability to bold, italicize, and underline text in a textarea field? I would also like for them to be able to use bullets inside the field. Is this even possible in the traditional textarea form item? Or do I need to use another language? Can anyone give me an example of where someone else has accomplished these things?

hmmm

i dont think you can do that, i could be wrong though

maybe an option would be an iframe?
if you are using the textarea for the scrollbar for big scripts in small areas.

I'm pretty sure it's possible. Many Web mail providers, for example, allow you to do all kinds of things to the text. If they can do it, so can I. But how?

Wow. I never imagined that Microsoft might have developed something like this. My only concern is alienating Netscape users. Depending on which survey you read, Netscape still controls 15-30% of the market.

Are there any solutions that also work in Netscape?

For a cross-browser solution look at this (http://www.daveclarkconsulting.com/research/selected_text.html) page by the inimitable Dave Clark (who evidently doesn't come here any more).

Which browsers is he crossing there?

Believe the Mozilla-crew is working on a contentEditable-style API but you-know-who would know more about it.

Netscape: 15-30%? :p

The link I just gave you is to a Bugzilla bug to add contentEditable to the textarea element -- and I believe, to all elements...

There is no textarea referenced in those links because textarea is defined to not allow the kind of text formatting that was requested.

My point exactly Roy
