gcapp, I want you to e-mail me your code and a picture of your db or the db itself and any other information that will help me. I will look into the problem you tell me in your e-mail to me.

(I don't know if you read PMs and your e-mail is hidden from me, so, sorry whammy for this post.)

No problem... I'm glad you may have more time to help... :)

I have to go to work in the morning. :D

But, all of his questions have already been answered correctly (and thoroughly)... it seems to me he hasn't even looked through the changes made to his code, yet...

Well, if he needs anymore help and since I kinda stop comming to the forums as much as I should and want to, I always look at me e-mail and I would be glad to help with what I know.

As much as fixing problems people have and ask, I learn new things that they are using and new methods that can help me.

I know, if this forum was never made, I would not know of alot of things, and I have gotten alot of help from alot of people. I know you have helped me alot, whammy.

I hear you... if it wasn't for this forum, I most likely wouldn't have a job as a web developer.

It was this forum that got me interested in programming again, and learning javascript a little more thoroughly - which also led me to a better understanding of datatypes, which, along with me seeing the opportunity to learn ASP on my own and apply it to real world situations opened up the possibility for me to get a better paying and easier position in the company I already worked for! I was very lucky in that regard.

I really do like to try and help people to return the favor. I see you have been learning a LOT on your own, and have some good advice to share.

That is a very good thing in more than one way... first of all, you're figuring things out on your own by trial and error (which is the best way to learn anything), and you aren't scared of tackling anything. :D

Well, I am a little scared of trying to do something I know will take awhile, but would be very worth it.

I noticed alot of people are selling scripts. So what I want to do is make a forum exactly like PHPBB but in ASP. I could sell it, or just give it away for free. Maybe ask for donations and let people help me make it more perfect. Just like Netscape did for their source code. They released it, and a 16 year old kid downloaded it, and made some huge fixes.

(I saw it on the discovery channel when I came home form school and turned on the tv. I couldn't find the remote and I was already sitting down... so... ;) )

I am also very happy to see I have made you proud of me.

Hey Morgoth, I'm venturing into the same thing with an ASP Bulletin Board lol.

I'm going to put it on my site you are hosting and ask for donations, here is my thread I posted to see what sought of interest it would get http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7606

I was going to sell it but I am for now just going to have it as free until it is perfect and I can scrape up some peeps to help me with support.

Maybe we could share Ideas/problems/fixes ?

Morgoth, Mhtml,

we seem to have the same sort of altruistic intentions. also planning to create a sort of workshop-forum for ASP.

general idea : people post a question/problem their, and 'experts' write the complete code to fix it. In the workshop area you can then look at all the code, see the databasedesign + browse these sollutions or download all the files.

(and what's more : it will run on the same server as you guy's use/own)
so you might check it out and maybe want to participate. Don't know if their will be a lot of 'people-in-need/in-training' that will wander of to my app, buth from what i learned from this forum, their are some guys trying to get a good site up, without way to little knowledge to even pose straight, punctual question, so i think/fear that a lot of experts will be needed.

guys like gcapp need something else then this forum. something extra/different. (gcapp, don't mean to offend you. i also wasn't borne brilliant so i once was in the same situation.)
i don't mean this in a competitive way (who's the best helper ? you know. )
i hope to provide a complementary service : dealing with beginning programmers that basiccly need to learn programming in stead of fixing bugs.

so i'll certanly would like to check up on you guys, to advice my visitors the best i can, and to point them to other fora/applications that might be better suited for them (and that you guys probably are building)

succes to you all.

If we are all creating a forum, and apearently all being hosted by me, we could either do something such as:
1) Go off in either direction and not care about the other person.
2) Go off in either direction and shard your source code with only the 2 other people until it's complete and then it's your code. (This way, people can make their own looking forums, but have some code, and most code that do the same thing as all forums do.)
3) work together on only one forum, and since it will be a original look and idea, we wont get sued by phpBB or VB buletin (hehe)

If you guys want to do any of these or have your own ideas, bring them up. It would be good to see.
I know I want to make a forum look exactly like phpBB but I know I will add more too it. I know that vb Bulletin has a php code tag, and not an asp code tag... That is something I would like to add.

Lol, I was thinking of that very idea today. I never actually knew what the PHP button did so I read the vb code help and thought why not also have an asp one in my forum?

I like the idea of working together on an original forum. If you look at most other forums they were all made by a bunch of peeps.

It would also get done in less time!

Morgoth, Mhtml,

Sure, I'm interested in working together (of coarse, why not?). Buth at this date, I haven't seen what you guys are working on. Like you haven't seen anything I work on. By next weekend, I'll try to have the first, verry basic, version of my workshop up and running.

I think it's a little bit to soon to decide how we best can help each other.

It would be a waste of time/energy to create strongly overlapping apps. If were goïng to create "complementary services", it would be fantastic if we could bundle our apps and create a platform were all kind of problems/question can be posted and solved. (from straigt, punctual, question to building a complete modules).

For me, it would be easy to adjust, since i'm building my app from scratch (never seen anything like it).

So let me know if your interested + if you already got something running.

Morgoth

Well, I haven't started yet. But really I wouldn't mind working by myself, and if you guys have already started, it really makes no sence for me to be behind and have nothing to contribute. So, we could all just work together on either sharing code or helping eachother with problems. Just like how this forum, now, work.

I've got a bunch of really useful regular expression functions that I wrote - and love writing others if you run into anything you want to validate. :D

Morgoth,
Hello again. I'm so glad you will help me. I am in a jam. I have working on this for a solid week.

Ok, here is the deal. I have the three pages attached along with a text file of my database.

The three files are subscriber_step_1.asp, subscriber_step_2.asp and subscriber_options.asp.

These pages are for adding, editing, viewing and deleting records to my database table.

The view part works perfect.

The edit part will bring up the record that is to be edited, but when I try to submit it, I get a syntax error in UPDATE section of subscriber_step_2. I belive it has to do with the fact that the datatypes for Start_Date and End_Date are Date/Time.

The add part is basically that same. I get the form, try to add a record and get a syntax error in the INSERT INTO section and again it may be because of the datatypes of the same Start_Date and End_Date.

Now I could email you personally the link to my login with the password so you can check it out. I just don't want it on this forum.

Now I got this code from a friend of mine and it works for him, except that his table has no Date/Time datatypes.

So if you could help me it would really be great. I have been spinning my wheels for a week.

If you want to email me to get the password it is gcapp@adelphia.net

I really appreciate the help.

Gary

Your BEST bet, Gary, would be to search Google for SQL tutorials, (and include Access as a keyword).

You really want to know this stuff, so you don't have to depend on us. And to be honest, it's not hard, you just have to play around with it a bit (just ask Morgoth... I helped him with a few things, but he took the initiative and has probably learned everything else to this point on his own). :)

If you check out the webmonkey tutorial (and really go through it, step by step) that I posted before, that will help you out IMMENSELY with your understanding of databases and datatypes... as a matter of fact, I had been developing in ASP for quite awhile before I went through that tutorial, and it STILL taught me a few things!!!

"I'm in a hurry to get this done" is no excuse for not trying to figure things out on your own... since if you had spent the time to learn from the sources provided (like the "Rugged ASP" tutorial on webmonkey.com, for example), you would have already solved the problems you're having on your own. In much less time.

I'm in no way perfect or the best programmer around, but I have a lot of tenacity and I tend to play around with stuff until it works the way I want it to. :)

You also might want to check out:

http://www.liquidrage.com
http://www.haneng.com
http://4guysfromrolla.com

The above sites have a wealth of knowledge - perhaps even more in some respects than the book that I originally learned from. Since your main problems seem to stem from datatypes, I'd do a search for them first. There's actually only ONE datatype in ASP... "Variant", but depending on how you treat your variable, it will change the way that ASP interprets it. However I've noticed you've resulted to changing all of your field types to "text", which isn't what you want to do (except if you are IMPORTING something into Access, but that's another subject).

And it really isn't hard. If I can figure all this stuff out, you can too!

P.S. Please take this as constructive criticism. I'm not trying to disrespect you in any way... and I can tell that you are very smart, but just frustrated (and take my word for it, EVERYONE gets frustrated!!!). And that is from a lack of basic knowledge of ASP and Structured Query Language (SQL).

I'm just trying to lead you to the right path... since I've been there and done that. :D

Bottom line: Take the webmonkey tutorial. And we'll go from there. :D

I think whammy has a good point, plus I am unable to run the code you have given me. I do not have the cookies and I don't see the area to make them.

I'll tell you what... if you promise to take the webmonkey tutorials that I have posted, I will make your form(s) work. (Assuming I have access to the complete script)... I have so far. But be warned, I may rewrite them completely if I don't like the code. ;)

But you must promise not to post another question that was answered in the "Rugged ASP" tutorial (unless you need some clarification on something).

Deal? :D

Well all that I have done at the moment is create a user login.

I wouldn't mind code sharing though.

You love your regular expressions don't you Whammy?:D
I'm going to redo my user login validation using them right now!:)

P.S. If you want I will send you all I have come up with so far... they all seem to work very well. :D

Whammy,
I appreciate your comments. I am probablly like a lot of other people and get frustrated and maybe it comes otu wrong in my posts. Believe me I try to learn as I go and I have 3 books sitting in front of me. I have managed to develop most of the pages on the site I am creating, but I have needed some help along the way. The big problem I have is that in the books and such, I can't find the right example for me to try to follow. Most examples in these books are very restricting. For instance they show you how to update a record for a text datatype, not a date/time. So I try and try and I've even tried completely different codes and I still get stuck.

I appreciate the offer of writing my code for me, but I really don't want anyone doing that because the table I am dealing with is used on a couple of other pages and I don't want to have to change the table in any way.

Here's my big frustration - I probably asked 4 or 5 different people about how to have my code work with a Date/Time datatype. I think all of them gave me a different version of how to do it. Well I try and change the code in different ways and still get type mismatch errors. So my big question is why???

I know this code is a little deeper than html. I don't have any problems with that. I guess it's just the frustration mounting.

I won't bother you the same question anymore, but I hope I can still ask questions about other issues.

Thanks!
Gary
