View Full Version : possible ? 4 ethernet cables, 2 pc's ?

Hi,

Hope this is not a silly question but :

I recently was given an old laptop, and keep it on 24/7 to download things, instead of using the Desktop PC - which was way to noisy.

I also inherited 4 x pcmcia laptop Ethernet adapters - which can all go in the laptop (with the docking station attached there is 4 x pcmcia slots total). I also have a load of pci (Desktop PC) Ethernet cards lying about. And crossover cables. See where I'm going with this?

If I Networked the Desktop & Laptop using all the above, so end up with 4 x 100mbps Ethernet networks between them.

Can I utilise this to get a theoretical 400mbps connection between the 2 machines? Would it work if I 'bridged' all 4 adaptors on both PC's? Is there any software that can do this?

Currently I'm using just 1 ethernet link to copy files across and its slow...

Thanks for any ideas

I'd imagine that the reason it is slow is that the old laptop has a slow old hard drive that is impacting the performance to copy data and depending on how old the desktop it could be partially at fault to.

But you can certainly do what you are thinking about and have four network cards. I'm not quite sure how well it will load balance everything on its own though, I've never setup a network configuration with multiple network cards that were all crossovers.

You could also get a gigabit PCI lan card and a gigabit PCMCIA LAN card and then have 1000mbps data transfer ;)

Also if you're getting slow transfer speeds, I've found sometimes before it's due to lack of RAM in the machine copying from or to.

I think you have helped me rephrase my question :

Can I set up some sort of load balanced network with 4 x 100mbps Ethernet cards, and 2 pc's running server 2003 (laptop) and xp pro (desktop) ?

So should I map each of the network paths to one folder on each PC, and have a load balanced 400mbps ish network? Or will I just work when the 4 'network connections' are mapped to 4 different locations?
[EDIT]
Laptop P2 700mhz 128mb ram
Desktop Athalon xp 2500+, 750ish mb ram

if you just create 4 connections between the two, xp and server 2003 should be able to automatically load balance
