No I don't want an illegal copy of the product key. When viewing your windows 98cd through dos, if you type dir, it gives you the volume serial number. I found an unlabelled win98 cd and want to know if it's second edition. Does anyone know what the volume serial number is for SE?

It's not the "Volume Serial Number" from the DIR command you should be looking at, use the VER command to get the BUILD number, it's the BUILD number which will tell you the version. (2222 is the SE build number).

Well either way, I went ot install today and my SE key didn't work, so I guess that answers my question. But thank for the response.
