I am trying to make that a user can save to thier desktop that they can click to go to my site. I am using a 'file.url' file. My problem is is that I want a custom icon on the file. But no matter what I do, I cannot get the file to downlaod with a custom icon..
I see AOL put custom icons on my desktop all the time.
I want to do it too.
HOW?
Thanks
Steve

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't AOL put icons on the desktop via an exe file?

Maybe, I do not know.
I have created a .URL file, clicked properties, told the file to use my custom icon. It looks fine on my desktop. I upload the file to my server (windows 2000) and put a link for people to download it..
That doesn't work.
Funny, I made one for mac users, using a mac and it works no problem...
:(
Thanks
Steve

That's coz you're telling your pc to give the file that icon, it's not 'programming' it to use that icon for everyone elses pc. They'd have to download your icon image too, but they'd still prolly have to right click and choose the image themselves. More I think about it, the more I'm convinced it's an exe (or another program) file sites use.

If you're using IE 6 and have a favicon.ico file in the root of your website or are using the special link tag to specify an icon for your page then simply createing a shortcut to that page on the desktop will give it the icon specified. With other browsers your milage may vary, it's a relatively new concept this idea of icons associated with web sites and it may take a while before you can expect to see support for it in most browsers.

I have not seen anything like that either unless an .exe file is executed which creates shortcuts to the programs that are installed on the computer but not something that's linked or available online!!

Go to Yahoo News (http://news.yahoo.com/fc/?u), note the icon showing in the Address bar. Right-click on the page background and select "Create Shortcut", once the shortcut is created on your desktop note that you have the same icon as was in the address bar.

That's something I've been trying to create with a button image on a site too, Roy.... would you like to suggest whether that is also possible as well as the IE right mouse option too? If so, would you like to take a stab at what a possible action code might be... linking to say... 'create shortcut.gif' please?
Cheers!

K.B.,
I did some looking but couldn't find any script for making a desktop shortcut via a web page.
