Anybody with a 1gb iPod Shuffle

I need your help!

Very recently, my shuffle's partition tables have committed suicide, and subsequently freeze iTunes and the iPod Updater, Mac or Windows, when trying to mount it. (OSX just freezes when inserting it, as it has problems even mounting it as a usb thumb drive now too).

Now, I've logged into >console mode and `dd if=/Applications/Utilities/iPod\ Updater.app/...../Firmware-128.1.1.2 of=/dev/disk2s1`, trying to manually do the job of the iPod Restorer. After doing that, it doesn't freeze the computer anymore, but it isn't usable, and attempts to restore it leave it in the previously kill-your-computer state.

I only wish I had thought to do a complete binary dump before it broke, but the thought never struck my mind. So, if any of you have a 1gb iPod Shuffle (and OSX or Linux), this is what I'm asking:
1. Temporarily delete all your music off of it (to keep the binary dump small)
2. Find out what device it is on your computer. In OSX, if you have a single hard drive, then the iPod typically is be /dev/disk1 after mounting. If you have two hard drives other than the iPod, /dev/disk2. (and so on). If you are unsure, leave it unmounted, do a `ls /dev/disk*` in the terminal, then plug the shuffle in and run the same command. The new disk is the iPod. You may see /dev/disk2s1 and the like, we just care about the /dev/disk2 part.
3. Run the following command: `dd if=/dev/disk2 of=~/Desktop/shuffledump.bin` (where disk2 is the disk we're looking for. very important to do disk2 and not disk2s1)
4. Email the .bin as an attachment to jasonkarldavis@gmail.com

If anybody here can do all that for me, I'll love you forever! I don't have a PayPal account, but I'll help you out on any Javascript questions you might have for a while. :D

And if nobody has one, I do intend to send it off to Apple in a week or two unless the binary dump makes its way to my inbox (and it works), as it is still under warranty....

My mom and sis both got 512mb Shuffles for christmas. If they can be of any use to you, lemme know. I've got a Mac in the basement that I could hook up if need be.

Thanks for the offer. :) A binary dump of those would probably write the wrong sizes in for the partition table, however. I'll just have to package this little sucker up and mail it off to Apple.

Sorry I couldn't help. Apple really gets ya with the shipping when you have to send something to 'em. I'm gonna buy the AppleCare plan from now on.

I have 1 GB shuffle I don't use, so no worries about deleting or losing its contents. Do you still want this doing?

That would be great! If you have problems dumping the binary image, let me know. If there is no music or data files on the iPod, the image should be less than a megabyte I think.

dd-ing the image didn't help any. Turns out it is a fairly common problem with the iPod shuffles, and Apple's policy is to replace them as is (as long as they are still under warranty).
