if for example td width is 1024 and the content in the td doesn't fit in this width, the td will automatically span and include the rest of the content on a second line.

i don't want this to happen. i want the td to stay 1 line and cut the rest of the unfit content.

how is that?

I would have to test-drive it, but you could try "overflow: hidden" in you styles.

By the way: please observe the Posting Guidelines (http://www.codingforums.com/postguide.htm) with respect to post subjects; "tr help" not only is rather non-descript, but it's also confusing since you really have a td question. A good, descriptive post subject can help you attract the attention of those willing and able to help you out.

What Ronald says, but with white-space:

<td style="overflow:hidden; white-space:nowrap" width="1024">
This cell will be one line of text and never be longer then 1024 wide.
</td>
