css and table grid lines

howdy,
I am learning css, I have a problem, how do you control the gridlines in a table, I have the border set but that only does the outside border?

also, how does padding work? how do you set it? and how do you control the thickness of a border, I put in a number but the css validator says your not supposed to. but the options I have don't make it as thick as I would like. one more thing, what is this inherit that everything has?
