I create for myself and occasionally do some freelance work, usually contacting someone in the Work Offers and Requests forum, or by bidding on a project on one of the freelance sites. How much you get paid is determined by the quality of your work and the reputation you build. At first you may want to do a few projects very cheap or even free to begin building a portfolio which will go a long ways in receiving jobs.

The ammount you get paid is variable, it depends on several factors some being what exactly you are making, how extensive it is, how quickly it has to be done and what languages you have to do it in. If they say they want you to go in a fix this website someone wrote for them back in 1997 that is done in poorly written HTML and ColdFusion with no indentation, then you can usually get paid more than a site written in like PHP just for the sheer difference in the number of CF developers versus PHP.
