Hover state help

I have a list that I am using for navigation and I with css put a border with a blue background without the bullet. When I try to hover over the links I would like the whole background to come up a lighter blue color. Instead I have only the link showing the blue color and not the background.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

Make the link display:block;

Thanks a lot that's what it was I had it displayed as inline at first.
