Is there any way to go the other way?
I am looking for a way to convert .xls files to .pdf file to be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
I can find loads of Shareware version, but no FREEWARE versions with no watermark or stamp? Has anyone got one, or knows where to get one?

try this link: http://www.pdf995.com. This software will allow you to make pdfs from lots of different office formats and maybe some others. It is free, but does popup a sponsor ad in your browser when you use it. It works as a print driver, so, once you have it installed, you can go in Excel as if you were printing your file, and then click on the pdf995 'printer' when it lets you pick what you want to print it on.

Adobe spent a lot of money developing the PDF format and the programs necessary to create and view them and you don't want to buy a copy of the software to create PDFs. If everyone thought like that then there would be no software for you to run on your computer at all as someone has to pay to write it.

Download and install OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/), open the Excel file and click the button on the toolbar to directly export as PDF. I haven't tried making PDF's in it myself though so cannot justify how good it would be converted.

I think that the new Microsoft Office has PDF export feature.
