View Full Version : Question about Angelfire free hosting
Hi All!
I just signed up for a free angelfire account to put my website on for my small business (a Digital Hard Disk Recording Studio). I am looking for somewhat of an interactive site and plan to use some javascript templates in my site. Possibly even a flash into? I have Dreamweaver MX studio.
My question is... is it possible to use java script, flash, etc. on a angelfire free account with 20meg server space and 1 gig of bandwidth?
Any comments would be much appreciated.
cheers

BTW... I plan on using MP3.com or something comparable for displaying media that I've created for customers so I won't need space on my site for that.

yes, but i think you might find, that with only the one gig of transfer, you'll be running out fast.

If you're planning on having a "somewhat of an interactive site"----I'm guessing, some links-----maybe polls------some kind of feedback form(s)......
and, you're gonna use something comparable to mp3.com-----I'm guessing for downloading, possibly......
then 1 gig should be plenty!! You said "small business"......
I found a formula for transfer rate......
It is as follows:
Example (for ONE page): 3 10k images, and 2k in HTML files = 32K of data
multiply that, by the number of visitors you expect per month.....
let's say 100,000!!!
That equals 3.2G a month in data transfer!!
I have a site, with about 45 pages--------THIRTY of which, are interactive-------a little less than 3Ms of data, for the WHOLE site-----haven't gone over a gig, yet------'course, I have waaaaaaay less than a hundred thousand visitors a month-----PLUS-------they all don't use those enteractive pages at the same time (those pages, BTW, are only like, 13k apiece)!!!
Keep the amount of your graphics, low-----use text links vs. clip-art (JPGs/GIFs/etc.)-----and, you should be cool!!!

Am I missing somethin?... what's wrong with angelfire?
It doesn't look like a bad choice for my needs...especially for the price.............FREE!
However, I would appreciate any recommendations as to what would be a better choice for me.
Thank you for your time

I would have to recommend that you use one of these instead of Angelfire.
Granted, Angelfire is good, seeing that I made a dummi site, which I uploaded (www.angelfire.com/realm2/thedarkangel) which seems to for some reason have no ads, even though I have the free option.
BUT there are other sites that gives you amazing features that - well Angelfire doesn't. For example:
Brinkster (www.brinkster.com) gives you 60 mb of webspace and I think something like 5gig worth of data transfer, but I am not all too sure about that.
Coolfreepages (www.coolfreepages.com) is okay, but that is about it.
Crosswinds (www.crosswinds.net) is pretty good, but you do get a funky url with it, that is useless unless you use something liike SmartRedirect (www.smartredirect.com).
The choice is yours.
--- I wonder why my site seems to have no pop ups or ads? Hrmm... (the Angelfire dummi one that is, www.angelfire.com/realm2/thedarkangel)
Anyhow, good luck!

www.freewebspace.net (and not COM, com is a free host which is ok) is a search engine for free hosts

lost, dont get me wrong angelfire is a good host.
but the last time i used it (long time ago) i did not like it
i would prefer Geocities (http://www.geocities.com/) over it.
and 2 popup windows? sheesh
geocities also has a very good file manager

I prefer www.brinkster.com over all the ones mentioned... advert free, what can be better than that for a free option?

Because it's a business site, it looks really unprofessional (not to mention aggravating) to have Angelfire's pop-up ads ( or anyone else's for that matter) intruding on your users business visit.
Also stay away from any free host that has the word "free" in the address as it also looks unprofessional. (If your a business, why are you on a cheap free site? Highly questionable...then, you want money?)
Most of the hosts mentioned above are pretty lame...except for maybe Brinkster...but it's slow and has nowhere near the 5gb's transfer mentioned above. Most will be lucky to have 1gb (more likely 500mb).
Although Angelfire, Geocities, and Tripod are big enough not to go anywhere soon (die), smaller free hosts quickly leave the scene all the time. This is from usually providing wayy too much in terms of free services.
Personally, you'd be better off buying a TLD name for $9 from Go-Daddy and paying a whole $5 a month for quality hosting without ads seeing as this is a business site. With any luck, you'll also get some scripting languages such as ASP, CGI, or PHP which will come in handy as you progress.
More info on free hosts here (http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/). :D

i agree with zoobie, having a free host is like trying to sell lemonade on the sidewalk (ive seen that a few times in comic books, wonder if it really is like that in america?), if you have a domain it looks good if it has no ads it looks better. people will probably think your companys fake and that your a con-man so stick to paying hosts
