I've been a long time photoshop user, and i have recently been messing around with linux and i have to say GIMP is a very impressive freeware application, reminds me of photoshop very much it even opens up .psd files. Its available for windows OS , if your thinking about purchasing Photoshop i urge to to atleast first try out GIMP it being a freeware program and all, It has all the essentials you need. I was also very impressed with the "Measure angles and distances" tool. Try it out.

Yes the GIMP is a good program, its interface is a bit rough at first but you get used to it. I was able to get Photoshop through a student discount. Also your advertisement of GIMP could almost be classified as spam.

I started using GIMP before I ever had Photoshop, and since I've gotten used to its UI, I actually prefer using it over Photoshop. Overall, a really powerful opensource project. Could use a little polish though. :)

I've never really used the GIMP for the simple reason that I've had Photoshop for a couple of years and gotten used to that - it's an extremley worthy project though.
