So, finally the W3C gets on the train.

I just hope they take what work WhatWG have done to heart instead of working from scratch.

I don't keep up with WhatWG mailing lists or anything... was there was prior indication or dialogue between the two groups?

I'm not keeping up to date on WhatWG either. I would be surprised if there's not a good bit of overlap though, from the charter of this WG <uri:http://www.w3.org/2006/webapi/admin/charter.html>.

WHATWG:
As the audience, scope and participants of WHATWG and the Web API Working Group overlap, the two communities should work together to provide a common basis for application development on the Web.

Hi folks,

as you remember a W3C "WebApps WG" has been discussed here before it =20
was official. Well, now not only is it official but there are two WGs!

The Web APIs WG (http://www.w3.org/2006/webapi/) will be working on =20
standard APIs for use within browsers, covering both the rich =20
interaction aspects and the need to finish work on some of the DOM =20
specifications that haven't been touched in too long. The public list =20=

is public-webapi@w3.org (sub: public-webapi-request@w3.org?=20
subject=3Dsubscribe).

The Web Application Formats WG (http://www.w3.org/2006/appformats/) =20
will be producing a binding language based on Mozilla XBL and sXBL =20
(http://www.w3.org/TR/sXBL), as well as a language for user interface =20=

(=E0 la XUL). It list is public-appformats@w3.org (sub: public-=20
appformats-request@w3.org?subject=3Dsubscribe).

Both groups intend to work closely with the community at large, =20
including the people who work on the WHAT WG specifications. So make =20
sure your voice is heard over there by joining those lists and =20
expressing your opinions!

Very cool... Although I have a feeling that IE7 will be out before any of this is implemented, which probably means another 5 years lacking standards support :P.
