Reshaping the canvas

is it possible to reshape the canvas? i need to make round and oval shaped web buttons (maybe fish shaped too) and put them over a very active background. (splicing the background pic into the white area of the button won't work here)

Example:
If i had a picture that was star shaped, reshape the canvas to be star shaped.(no white background showing)

use a transparent background so your image 'floats'

Be aware, unless you use a GIF, most browsers would croak when coming across the PNG alternative.
