View Full Version : bad psu??

I have an aging pc (amd barton 1.1  ) I reset the bios and something strange started happening. When cold booting it wont post, but if I reset, sometimes it needs multiple resets, it will post. My suspicion is the PSU is dying. A friend thinks so as well. What are your thoughts?

Well have you tested it in another machine? What was the result?

I valve my gaming pc to much to swap it out. I'm only looking at a $26.00 replacement anyways. Maybe this is just my way of getting the Mrs to approve a low level gaming upgrade for my spare pc. :D

When you do get it to boot, go into the BIOS and look at the hardware monitor. It should say what kind of voltage levels the PS is putting out, if they are erratic and/or way off spec, then it probably is the source of the problem. If the BIOS doesn't have that functionality, you can always use a multimeter and do it yourself.

Oh really? I wouldn't skimp on a power supply, you aren't looking at one of those cheap, high wattage, off brand ones are you?

I'll check out the bios tonight if I can kick my wife off Ubuntu for a few minutes.

Update: I changed the battery on a co-worker's suggestion. Reset the cmos and bios and still have the same issues. I'm getting the feeling it's the motherboard itself which is an old asus A7 which has/had an oc'd 1.1 amd barton on it. I'm pretty sure that I'll end up just leaving this pc on 24.7 and avoid the issue all together.
