IMO, the best place to start is with these books, written by some of the people that are developing Perl.

Learning Perl By Randal L. Schwartz, Tom Phoenix, brian d foy

Programming Perl By Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen, Jon Orwant

Perl in a Nutshell By Stephen Spainhour, Ellen Siever, Nathan Patwardhan
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/perlnut2/

Learning Perl on Win32 Systems By Randal L. Schwartz, Erik Olson, Tom Christiansen

Here are some of the projects from the Perl course I took in collage.

These (http://www.stonehenge.com/merlyn/columns.html) may be a little high level for someone just beginning, but I found them to be very useful and have referrred to them over and over as my Perl skills have increased.

hyperbole,
that's a good resource, I often use it myself. I'm not sure if you noticed, but merlyn is the screen name of Randal Schwartz which co-wrote 3 of the books I suggested.

Beginning Perl <http://learn.perl.org/library/beginning_perl> is also an excellent resource for beginners.
