Remember the startup screen for Photoshop 6? I've seen that style of art since I got Photoshop several years ago, but I've never spent the time to learn how to do it. It seems pretty straightforward, but every time I attempt it, it just comes out a mess of diorganization. Are there any tutorials out there to teach me how to make this style?

By the way, I'm supposed to turn in a poster on Thursday and I'd like use use this style. Thanks in advance.

I can tell you that its A LOT of layers and A LOT of changing blending properties. I can also tell you that its a lot of trial and error.
he did put this on the first one though:

Thanks for the reply. Hey, I didn't even think to go there, lol. That's funny. They do seem to have some more good examples (such as this one (http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/premium_content/2d__and__photoshop/add_another_dimension), but it looks like most of their tutorial cost money. That stinks. I'll keep looking there and elsewhere. Thanks for the link!

yeah like this. Took 15 minutes or so, so probally not the best example.
someting like 25 layers and a whole slew of filters and blending changes:

ummm well lets see if I can do a little tut thing. It was all winging it so I'll try to cover the gist of it.
1) get pic of cute japanese girls belly.
1.a) my cartooning effect : copy the image into a new layer. filter>stylize>find edges. image>adjust>threshold. magic eraser the white out of it. Blend it on top of the original. thats gives the black grainy outlibne etc...
2) cut out everything but the image (all the background crap)
3) new layer. gradient fill with the purple/blue. filter>render>clouds
4) new layer. gradient with two different colors. filter>render>clouds>pixelate>mosaic>stylize>find edges (that makes the grid). blend it.
5) (the swirly stuff in the background) I used Porcellian (dafont.com) and a few capitol E's and slapped them together. The swirl on the left side is just them typed green and blended. on the right side it's the same type but filter>distort>wave (play with the settings) blended and opacity changed.
6) the little light dots are just that. paintbrush (faded outline) copy layer>blur>gas. blur. again. slap thenm together>blending props.
7) the white text in the background is just that. typed in some junk and opacity and blend.
8) the little flame things onm the right side is magic lasso some jagged lines. fill with color. filter>distort>shear. blend.
9) the orange lines through the middle are just 3 orange line tool lines. light oranmge drop shadow. filter>distort>shear. blend.
10) the text of 'belly' is Luftwaffe. type> ctrl+click>expand>stroke with a lighter shade. blend.
in a nut shell thats it.
first thing to remeber is that you need to start out with a cute japanese belly or it's all down hill from the start ;)

LOL. Unfortunately, the scope of my project won't allow me to start with a cute japanese belly. You've given me a lot of great tips, which I'm working on incorporating. Thank you so much!

Not too much...but I have a good excuse! My first child was born two days ago (Amber Faith (http://www.chrisandabby.com/amberfaith/))...so I haven't had much time for homework. I'm just about to work on it some, along with a pile of other homework. I expect to be up most of the night working. I'll post a first version hopefully in a couple hours.

Thanks! We like the name too, that's why we chose it :)
Here's what I have...probably will have to stay this way due to lack of time and other work to do. All I really did was blend the pictures together. I would have liked to do more with it, but I think it's good enough to get a decent grade. If you have any quick suggestions, I might be able to get them in before I print it around 10 am.
