I don't know if this is the correct forum for this but I have a burning question to ask.
Do you know if it is possible to burn .zip files onto a CD-R using either using the Windows burner or Nero.
I have some files that I wish to burn onto a CD-R some of these files are inside .zip files and others are html & image files.
When I try using the windows burner the wizard asks to insert a disc even though there was one in the writer.
When I tried using Nero it burned the disc up to 36% and then hung.
It was showing it was trying to burn a .zip file.
If I am doing anything wrong please advise.
All help very much appreciated

How large is the zip file?

What version of Nero? You should be able to burn zip archives onto cd w/o any problems...

There are 3 zip files.
The largest is 6MB and the other 2 are about 1MB each
I'm using Nero 5.

That happened a lot to me with nero. It must be the software, you shouldnt have any problems burning .zip

I'm using Nero 6 Ultra edition version 6.6.* or something and it burns zip files fine...

Nero 7 is out or is coming out soon. Upgrade your version of nero though XP should be able to do it also. There is a software update that deals with the CD Writing software of windows that you probably should get. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Thanks but the main problem is that Nero, Windows & Media Player all recognize the CD writer but they don't seem to recognize that there is already a blank disc inserted.
I have tried different discs of different makes and Windows & Media Player don't recognize them at all but Nero burns so far then hangs.

What's the make and model of the cd writer? Have you tried doing a firmware update?

The CD Writer is:
MSI CD-RW MS8348
Could you please tell me how to do a firmware update

The firmware(driver) can probably be found on the MSI website...
How old is your burner? is it only in this case that the software doesn't recognize the blank disc or in all burning processes?

Are you sure the CDs are good? I once had 2 packs of bad CDs. I already changed CD writers and reinstalled drivers before I found out that other CDs were burnt with the same writer.

Yes the CDs are good. 2 of those I tried in my CD writer that were not recognized in friend's CD writer and they worked fine.

Also, you could try other burning software. A couple of possibilities for programs that you could get at least trial versions for free (legally) are Deepburner, CDBurnerXP, or Cheetah Burner. They can be found respectively at:
I've had pretty good luck with these. Hope these will help you out.
