Hey people,

Critique this please: http://www.newparadigmweb.com/jello.html

Note: Works as intended in Firefox and Opera 8.5; right column goes haywire in IE 6...any ideas why? I'd love to hear how it looks in other browsers..

Btw if anyone has a BFO about that little 1px error with the righthand outermost border let me know!

You have some validation errors: http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A//www.newparadigmweb.com/jello.html

I like the site, the code seems fairly good too with the exception of those errors found by the validator.

The site looks dull , do some rework to add some flavour to the background, header.
Blend the colors
The positioning though of the sections are thoughtful though. Also the feather image stands well except the background of the image is visible which is ok except it make is to blocky.

The curves of the nav background are not that well anti-aliased resulting in blocked carved lines, solution use gaussian blur and adjust levells to make those curves better ones. Good tutorial: <http://www.purephotoshop.com/article/27>

<a href="http://www.newparadigmweb.com">New Paradigm Web Creations</a>

Since you use absolute paths to your site like /images/ ... you can easily do this, which is lesser code to achieve exactly the same:

<a href="/" title="back to the homepage">New Paradigm Web Creations</a>

The same here:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://www.newparadigmweb.com/xtras/parajello.css" />

You get the same result:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/xtras/parajello.css" />

Include width and height attributes

<img src="/images/feather.gif" width="192" height="192" alt="Image - A Feather." title="A feather." />

The CSS:

This order should be followed for anchors for making it work 'cross-browser'.

Example from <http://www.splintered.co.uk/common/style.css> and reworked for your styles

a, a:link, a:visited { color: #000;text-decoration:underline;}
a:hover { text-decoration:none; color:#777;}
a:focus, a:active {color: #000; text-decoration:underline;}

It looks so nice until you hit the mouseovers on the menu - what were you thinking? I can see the attempt at a connection between the feather and the mouseover background colour, but this really doesn't work.

I agree about the mouseover color, but I otherwise like the site. I am seeing a gray backgound in FF, but since there are white corners on the graphics I'm guessing it should be white. If that's the case you should specifiy that.

I've tried switching the hover bkg color to white. That was one of my original choices but I'd thought I'd try the 9cc (blue-ish) color instead. But perhaps the white blends with the layout better..

That's cool. It's intentional then. I like the look, though, just wasn't sure if it was planned due to the image corners. If you keep it like that, please change the heading hover color to black maybe. As it is it sort of disappears on hover.

Less is more. Nice crisp and clean but somehow the site doesn't suggest 'web designer' from its appearance.

Not moaning, its better than my site :)

in N7.2 on the "Portfolio" and "Contact" pages the outer dotted grid and the footer is collapsing like it was an overlay, not following the rest of the page.

and the is no link to the main page on any of the pages

For example:

<p>I am commited to customer satisfaction and strive for quality in all my work, behind the scenes, as well as up front. You will find New Paradigm to be a pleasant, friendly, savvy service dedicated to meeting the wants of its clients.
</p>

<br />

You normally use <br /> INSIDE the <p> to force a line break
or to use <br class="clearer" /> to clear a float
eg
.clearer
{
clear: both;
display: block;
height: 1px;
margin-bottom: -1px;
font-size: 1px;
line-height: 1px;
}

If need to create extra (marginbottom) space after a <p> just use

p {margin-bottom:1em;}

Whoops, that <br /> tag isn't supposed to be there at all..thanks for pointing it out.

In response to lerura post, I don't know why N7.2 would do that...you say it's only on the portfolio/contact pages? Hmm. Thanks for letting me know.. Actually, the title at the top of the page is a "home" link...although right now, it links to the index instead of "jello.html."

This is rather importatn too since you need to know this forever when you style those links: the order of LVHAF = LINK VISITED HOVER FOCUS ACTIVE

The CSS:

This order should be followed for anchors for making it work 'cross-browser'. iF NOT FOLLOWING THIS ORDER, THE STYLES COULD FAIL BEING APPLIED ...

Code:

a, a:link, a:visited { color: #000;text-decoration:underline;} a:hover { text-decoration:none; color:#777;} a:focus, a:active {color: #000; text-decoration:underline;}
