i heard that there is (was?) this php software called Phorum.
just wondering, is this forum built on Phorum? i've seen other forums with almost exactly the same layout and everything, so i thought maybe they all are.

Nope. This is vbulletin. You'll find that most free forums try to copy the features on these forums, most fail too, or have loads of bugs.

most of the time you can find out what forum system you are on by scrolling right down to the bottom and looking around the copyright-is section and it should say "powered by vbulletin" or whatever. my fav is PHPBB but you can find a list here (http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Message_Boards/?tc=1) of all the differnt most used boards. nightfire, isnt the point of OSS to have the bugs fixed faster (and it being fre of course)? i heard that commerial software like vbuletin had loads more holes!

Yeah, they have problems too, but I've found free forums have more noticeable problems. PhpBB is probably the most stable free forum I've found (compared to how it was a few years back).

yeah, the bug tracker has calmed down since then:p having a hosted board is more secure because people cant see the source code and cant look for coding errors
