OK, planning on building new PC. What hard drive setup would you suggest?
Would it be best to have say, just a 20GB or so hard disk primarily for Windows installation, and then use a 200GB+ HD for data? Would that be any good - I mean, most stuff defaultly installs to C:\Program Files - I know you can change this, but is it hard keeping Windows and data seperate?
Or would it be better to say, have a 200GB HD for Windows installation, for programs etc; and then another 200GB for backups, and whatever else I might want to keep on there?
Interested to know your ideas on this! :)

How much data do you have to store? It's always a worthwhile choice to have a small partition for windows and program files just incase windows screws then you can just reformat that partition. I keep atleast 2 disks in every pc I have, one disk for windows and one for data.

Well I would easily use up 200GB on data, I'm guessing it's probably best to keep one drive for Windows and installations, and one for backups/data then.

Yeah - I'm in favour of a 2 disk setup in a lot of my systems because although I back my data up, if one disk goes down and for example only has Windows XP Pro installed on it, I can quickly purchase another disk and reinstall the OS on the new disk or try and ghost the data off the old disk if it's recoverable.

In case it matters I have a 4 HD setup. It makes finding old stuff a pain but it works.
main: 60 gig for all the install stuff
2nd: 20 gig from an old computer that now holds most of my music
3rd: 20 gig for whatever. It holds my old comps brains and some web files need every now and then.
4th: 8 gig from another old computer and is now a scratch disk for PS.

In one of my boxes I've got a 120GB, 160GB and a 40GB and a dvd burner. I've got two onboard SATA ports so that means another two drives when I get the cash :)

In my main computer right now I have a 74GB WD Raptor as my system drive, I installed Windows on it and all my programs. Then I keep all my data on a 250GB hard drive and I also have a 160GB external I use when I need to move lots of data like over to a friend's house or something.
I'd suggest only installing programs to whatever drive/partition you install the OS onto because for better or worse, when you re-install the OS, you have re-install the programs to get them to work right. And if you install programs to the other drives, you gotta manually delete them or install over them. It is just cleaner to have a system drive/partition and then a data one.
