Catching WMP events

Does anyone know how to catch Windows Media Player events - like PlayStateChange - in Firefox/Non-IE browsers?

Firefox can do that, but only if you have the Mozilla ActiveX Plug-In (http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/plugin.htm) installed.

Yeah I read about that. I was hoping to achieve it if possible without using it. Have you anymore suggestions?
