Loking at doing some sort of html email that will go out to 1,300 addresses.
Is that number of emails going out at once, to some sort of group I imagine, a big deal, or can it go out more or less as per through the mail gateway on the host?
Not looked into this sort of thing before, any dos and don't and pointers recieved with thanks
Email Tree came from the client btw, still not to sure where they got that from

Most webhosts in the U.S. won't allow that anymore.
You could pick an overseas (pacific rim) host ... that's what most spammers use for mass mailing junk around the world.
For example, see this host: http://www.host4gold.com
Here is their "about us" and "privacy statements":
Host4Gold was designed to offer what we felt other offshore hosts failed to provide. It is one thing for a host to provide space on a server for rent and an entirely another thing to not impose their moral beliefs on what they see is fit to be viewed on the world wide web. We do not pass judgment, monitor, censor or spy on our customers. We subscribe to the theory that no one government should dictate what is morally or politically correct for a world wide audience to view.
About Your Privacy
Host4Gold values your right to operate freely and privately. We have listened to your complaints about other hosts for stopping service for frivolous reasons and petty complaints by self appointed internet do-gooders. When you need a host who works on your side, you will be glad you choose Host4Gold.
That pretty much explains what I'm talking about.
The other option is to subscribe to a service that specializes in mass mailings and has certain rules that apply. For example, users can opt-out ... and I mean really opt-out (not a fake thing like spammers have).

1300 emails really isn't that many, if you have your own mail server, it should be able to handle it fine. I will also point out that there is a large difference between bulk emailing existing clients \ subscribers and just spamming your crap accross the world, but yeah a real opt out link is truly important. Also, allow your subscribers to choose if they prefer their informaiton in plain text or html format. If presentation is not important, just use plain text.
