Hi,

Is their any way of detecting a web site visitors Internet connection speed prior to download?
I have a site, which uses quite a bit of JavaScript to display an image slideshow and some DHTML navigation links, both of which are only implemented if the users browser supports JavaScript. However, I have noticed that whilst my page will download quite quickly using a 1Meg Broadband connection, it takes far too long to download when using a 56k modem. Many thanks in advance.

I don't think so, since most sites I visit that have videos and such have a way for you to tell them what your speed is...

I believe its possible through a server side script.

pseudo:

When server(webpage) accessed by user,
Start a timer(server-side), Send a webpage to client (by redirection or something),
(Client)webpage Onload, tell server timer to stop.
Calculate webpage size/time.

This is hypothetical but I think it would work. The accuracy.....No idea.
