NTLDR problems

A friend of mine went to install Windows XP coming from a previously Linux-only box.

He killed all the partitions from the XP installer (including the Linux ones), formatted it all in NTFS, and when it was done and rebooted, he got the error:

"NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

He tried installing on a different hard drive, as well as tried installing Win2k. With 2k he got a blank screen as opposed to that error.

He has done "fdisk /mbr" several times as well to no help.

Any ideas?

Apparently, after installing WinXP about 8 times, the problem sorted itself...

Thanks anyway.

NTLDR problems are always weird. With my ASUS A7A266 I used to get "Unable to find NTLDR" every now and then, even when running win98. I just shut off my pc for an hour or two, or removed the battery and put it back in and it went back to normal (but then you need to reset all bios settings).
