View Full Version : Just set up mySQL Database and have questions

Hi Folks,
I'm new to all this and surrounded by print outs of info on mySQL, CGI, ASP, PHP and Dreamweaver MX stuff. I'm working in Dreamweaver MX and have created an Order Form for my business website. Obviously I want to get the Form to work. As I'm totally new to all this it's been a major brain drain trying to figure out what way to go with this.

My ISP has kindly provided mySQL Databases for me of which I've created and activated 2 (user name and permissions done). This program seems to be associated (though not exclusively) with PHP and I've just downloaded software for Windows 98 from the PHP.com website. However the site doesn't exactly tell me what I'm letting myself in for when I install this software. I suppose that folks that do it know a hell of alot more than I do. So I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this software does and if I need to be scared about installing it on my computer?

I have just made a Ghost copy of my C: drive to my 2nd Harddrive but still I don't like being in the dark with software. My ISP has also provided CGI Email and FormMail scripts and I'm also wondering if I need to go down the long road of learning PHP on top of this.

I have only one product and want the customers to fill in name and address plus method of payment and shipping requests. I want the information to go back to them after clicking Submit Form saying Thankyou you have entered ...... (info) if this is correct Click Send. Then I get an email with the order and they get an email saying their order is being processed.

OK! Sorry this is so long :~))) But can I do this with CGI Email and FormMail? Do I need to install the PHP software anyway?
Any help and insight will be well appreciated but please don't get too technical with me :~))) It's hard enough already but I'm learning loads and loving it, still I need it simple :~))
Thanks for any replies,

If you want to have a development environment to simulate your real webhost you can use PHPDEV. Read more about it in this thread:

As for your form mail you can do it with either Perl through CGI or via PHP. Either one will work although PHP has a lot easier learning curve than does Perl. There is also a PHP version of the popular Matt's Formmail script written in Perl. That one can be found here:
