Allowing remote connections to my local server

ok, before I ask my question i would just like to say that I am aware of the risks and whats involved, and i have done this before, but I'm having trouble now...

What I want to do, is allow people to access my local server remotely. If I give them my IP addres they are unable to connect to the server. I have a firewall but disabling it makes no difference.

The thing is, I get access my internet through a wireless router, so when they are trying to connect to the IP, will the router find my server or just wonder what the hell is going on?

Im really not sure on this, dont know where to start, if it's even possible.

I'm assuming you are talking about a VPN connection to your machine correct? If that's the case, open up your router firmware and go to the port forwarding section. Then you have to forward the appropriate ports to the machine specified as the server. I don't recall which ones they are exactly, but a google search should clear it up (a quick search and I came up with:500, 1701, and 4500 not sure if that's right though) . You may also have an option in your router configurations to enable L2TP/IPSec passthrough, or you can put it in the DMZ. It's been a while so hopefully I'm not blowing too much hot air. :p

is it like an FTP server or webserver?? but wat you will need to do is set the server to have a static IP within your network and then in the port forwarding of the router forward the port that they will be connecting through to the server IP and hopefully it should work for you....
