connection error

hi,

after running the Apache & MySQL on my computer
then typing "http://localhost/phpmyadmin" in my internet explorer.
i get the following error message:

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) in C:\apache\htdocs\phpmyadmin\lib.inc.php on line 255

thats pretty vague, are you sure that mySQL server is running and that you have set the password and everything?

i think that MySQL server is not running although i tried to run it from both Windows and DOS.
i try to run MySql.exe from the dos prompt on the folder c:\apache\mysql\bin but also get the message:

Error 2003 : can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

what is the problem then?
