dropdown submit question

Hello,
I have a form where users need to select a category from a dropdown menu, when they select from the first drop down menu, I want it to update the second drop down with the correct data from the top one, ( hope someone understands what I'm saying ).

both dropdowns are being populated by the mysql/php.

my question is, how can i updated the second dropdown menu after someone making a selection from the first dropdown?

I don't really know any javascript,, so an example would be great!
