Multiple IE on same PC

Hi,

I don't know if I can post this question but I have a very annoying problem and hope someone can help.

My question is how can I install IE 5.0 and 5.5 on my PC, preserving IE6.

On a completely different note, how can I post a poll in this forum.

Hmm .. multiple IE... hmmm

Well, I'm not sure how this would work due to the fact that IE integrates itself into Windows... Try installing the browser into several different locations... for example:

IE5 - c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer 5\
IE5.5 - c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer 55\
IE 6 - c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer 6\

Now, I'm not for certain that Windows even gives you this option, but it might.

I know you can install older versions of IE (Like, IE3, but who wants that??? :D)

Try that and see if it does anything- like I said, I can't garuntee, and I've never tried it... so I'm just guessing.

Oh, sorry, just noticed that you wanted to Preserve IE6 - if installing in Separate locations doesn't do this - you may have to install them in order (In their separate locations)

You have to install them from lowest to highest, and going into the advanced install each time and checking Compatibility Mode or something like that.

It didn't work for me when upgrading from IE5.5 to IE6 a long time ago, so...... but that's how MS says you do it. :rolleyes:

why cant ms just hae a siple update exe to downlaod instead of their part by part installer which installs things as you are downloading them?

check out http://browsers.evolt.org where you can download the browsers as whole packages instead of those annoying active setup files.

But I've never had any luck running more than one IE - even if you succeed, you may find that it's doesn't help anyway. I once managed to get ie4 and ie5 both running, but ie4 wasn't really ie4 - it looked like it, but it supported scripting objects that only ie5 is supposed to support.

You're also limited by OS - XP cannot run earlier than ie6; ME cannot run earlier than 5.5

In the end I found a saviour - http://www.vmware.com - now I can have as many different versions of windows and ie as i want, all running in their own virtual machine in a window on a single host computer. way cool :thumbsup:

I disagree. IE5.5 displays the msn.com home page correctly. IE4 running in Compatibility Mode can not display it correctly. There are many other examples.

Microsoft specifically states:
"Purpose of Compatibility Mode
Some Web content can be affected by changes to the HTML parsing engine or object (scripting) model incorporated into new versions of Internet Explorer. For this reason, Web page authors or developers need to test their content with each version of Internet Explorer for which their content is designed. Prior to Internet Explorer 5, testing Web site compatibility with various versions of Internet Explorer required multiple computers or dual-boot configurations. With Compatibility mode, you can run an Internet Explorer 4-compatible browser side-by-side with Internet Explorer 5. Compatibility mode is designed for testing HTML parsing and script issues and is not intended to be used as a primary Web browser."

Oh I didn't mean to imply that it's not possible, only to pass on what happened when I tried :)

VMWare is cool ... and yes it is pricey. But in the long term ... can you buy FOUR computers with a full complement of hardware, all networked together, and all running different OSs, for $300. And I only say four cos that's how many I have set up; there is no limit to the number of virtual machines you can create.

Not selling it ... makes no odds to me .. but I consider a serious investment for any web developer.

And anyway - my company bought it for me :thumbsup:
