CAcert (http://www.cacert.org/)
CAcert.org is a community driven, Certificate Authority that issues certificates to the public at large for free.

is this somethign you have used and is secure?
I don't even see pricing or how to order on the site you posted. Where do you get it from?

In the past i have just used certificates from the hosting company but i'm wondering if there is a better solution.

https://www.cacert.org/help.php?id=6 <-- try reading that. You probably have more chance of understanding it all than me.

Oh, and the cert will be included in Mozilla browsers eventually.

can you trust that it is really secure? as secure as bought certificates?
What's the catch?

I don't think there is a catch. Normally it costs money to secure your site. That think that stinks so they set up their own operation. Try reading through the wiki (http://wiki.cacert.org/wiki/).

If you have your site live on a hosting providor, alot of them offer shared ssl's that "come" with your hosting plan. Most also offer a dedicated ssl you can purchase and can be trusted. I think where my sites are the ssl is like $80 a year.
