Well http://www.neilkelty.com has been launced and it is now ready for reviews.

A couple of things to note:
-The Offical Home stuff is just there untill i get a header image up
-I don't have the articles page done, and the profile page has to be changed
-I'm pretty sure it validates.

Have a wack at it! http://www.neilkelty.com

Looks nice, not fond of the little squares on the nav.. looks odd but maybe thats just me.
On some pages your words of wisdom is missing the bottom border.

And one last comment... they way you talk about yourself in the 3rd person is kinda scary

Its just a bit freaky... if you were with someone that talked about themselves in the 3rd person would you not think it was at least a little odd?

Design-wise, I find it quite monotonous, nothing there that stands out, or anything that provides a sense of wow.

Colours are heavily contrasting, and the style more than simple.

Just doesn't tickle these tastebuds.

I really like sleek and simple and this site is definitely simple... but not very sleek. When I loaded the page I saw a basic shape and a whole lot of small font. I didn't even read to the bottom and I doubt many others will either. Try mixing up the design a little to give it a bit of attitude, and stop talking so much and certainly stop talking in the third person. The site is dripping with self-indulgence just like 99% of the blogs out there but it is longer and less relevant to my life than most of them.

I hate to be overly harsh but the writing style is going to be my main critique. A website always ends up being craptacular if it doesn't have a well-formed raison d'etre. Here is a flow chart of successful web-design.

Concept > Content > Structure > Target Audience > Design > Feedback > Renewal

True, but I 'd say it's a major step up from Niel's previous designs?

The whole thing looks a lot more together than his previous stuff.

Niel: one thing I don't get is wether the write up on the homepage is being deliberately ironic or not? If it is, well i can laugh along with it - otherwise it's just a heap of misplaced, self congratulatory, overly verbose, indecipherable nonsense!
Sure, self confidence can be assuring, but too much and it sounds suspicious.

I was looking through the site and tried to think of how to sum things up, but then read the posts and this pretty much nails it:

End quote. Plus, (and I have to rant a bit here) there are just TOO MANY sites nowadays with average coding and average site design selling web design services. It seems as soon as someone learns how to code a basic page in HTML they put up a webpage advertising web design.

I'm really not using that rant as a personal attack on the site... I don't think it looks bad... I just don't think it looks very original or stands out at all. Throw some personality into it!

Kickin wonders what is wrong with 3rd person. Kickin thinks it sounds fine.

My english teacher refered to herself as Wiita(her last name), and she was quite the ************************. :)

Ok, so far things to note:

Design not sleek? - How to make it sleek? Any ideas?
Change to first person? - Ok.
Not so much text - Yeah, just have to get everything else up and running.

Anything else good or bad?

I'm not exactly trying to sell web design services here, yeah that be nice if my web design page would draw me a few clients, but I'm not seeing the average coding. All my pages validate, I'm using good semantics. Yeah, my design may not be the best, but I can't do great graphics. To let you know, these pages are served dynamiclly so its not just basic HTML.

I just got a bit tired of sitting around using a domain comcast.home.pages.users.allthesecharactersontomydomain.com/~neil

But thanks for the comments, at least you replied. And hey you gave my site another hit

Its not bad, but it needs some improvement

Suggestions

- The squares on the links are kind of ugly, and the font size on the links is too large. Also, the alignment on the squares is off.

- I don't like times new roman on sites, it looks blocky... i would use arial or verdana for the main site font.

- Try making it dynamically size... it looks awful small just sitting there in the middle, this is my biggest complaint about sites these days, people don't seem to grasp the concept of having the site look good on all resolutions.

- I'd change the gray on the side to something much lighter. That type of gray gives it a real sort of "geocities-esqe" amature feeling. Its pretty much the worst color possible on a web page, excepting bright neon colors.

The design's pretty average really; solidly built, well laid out and well coded, but it just doesn't have any visual flare - and the images that are there aren't always relevant to the content (most of them are just there to look pretty). It reminds me of those old-skool web designers who have pictures of mice, keyboards and anything vaguely internet related to make themselves look techy and clever.

Ditto what Gary and Rochard said about the content. It's long-winded and self-important; and the way it's been written in 2rd person is just scary. It would be alright if only the first paragraph was written in 3rd person (and the rest in 1st), but as it is, it just doesn't work. The thing that really gets me though, is the title "The Official Home of Neil Kelty" - are there other, unofficial, sites praising you? It just sounds pompous.

Sorry if I came over a bit harsh :o , but I always find criticism far more helpful than praise (if less satisfactory ;) ). However, this is certainly a step up from your previous designs :) .

All the best,
Ollie.

I like to add more rounded edges to my sites now so that they are just a little less formulaicly blocky. I find an interesting design shape ups the sleek factor significantly and if you are competent with photoshop it is really easy to achieve a unique or at least more unique shape.

I'm afraid that not providing a link to your portfolio websites doesn't hide the fact that they are anything but.

I'm making a fan site as we speak. =P

But yes the layout, while isn't bad, is quite bland (like I'm one to talk xD). The third person doesn't distrub me as much, but then again I'm pretty crazy myself. Pretty much anything I could say has been said.

Yeah, I'm redoing the portfolio page, sorry for the forgotten links.
