in a textarea but i want the actual images and links to show up, i don't want the code to show. is that possible?

No not in a textarea. Google for WYSIWYG editors.

is there a way you can put that stuff into an area where there is a scrollbar but not necessarily have it be a textarea?

Use an Iframe.

Lets say you got this.


<div id="scrollingdiv">
<!--some html code you have-->
</div>

Then the css would be like this:


#scrollingdiv {
overflow:auto;
width:400px;
height:100px;
border:1px solid #999;
background:#ccc;
padding:.5em;
}

Offcourse you can remove the backgroundcolor and border :)
