Obtain info from .txt file

Hello,

Could someone please tell me how to obtain text that is contained within a .txt file on the server.

Example :
I want my index.htm page to display (via javascript) the number that is stored in my "hits.txt" file in the same directory.

Not possitive, but I would guess you need a server side language for that, such as PHP. fopen() fread() fclose().
