Svg?

i'm not even sure it has to do with xml, but what is SVG? (or is it SGV?):o

SVG is short for Scalable Vector Graphics.

It is an XML Application with several DTD's, including SVG 1.0, SVG 1.1, and SVG Tiny and SVG Basic for Mobile devices (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVGMobile/).

Browser support is native in builds of Mozilla with it enabled, as well as in Amaya. The Adobe SVG plugin takes care of SVG embedded through <object> or<embed> for NS4 and IE. KDE also has a native implementation on the Window-manager level, so Konqueror should also support SVG.

Some of the basic shapes include <line/>, <circle/>, <rect/>, <path/> and <text>, among others.

I think it can replace Flash for vector graphics on the web, and VML (in IE) always was and remains a joke (at least in my opinion - I saw SVG before I did VML and never understood why anybody would want to use an inferior, platform/browser-limited vector graphics markup language such as VML).

ahhh...i knew before posting who'd reply, AND i knew that i'd be ready to hear those highly passionate, deprecatory remarks about IE... no offense jkd, but i honestly find ur loathing for Microsoft amusing...:)

thanx anyway, but where can u get the other browsers from? (amaya,kde,..) i've very rarely heard of them. also, know of any good svg sites for beginners?

VML is IE-only.

SVG is crossplatform and crossbrowser, and more so, with there being profiles for mobile devices, such as cellphones for example.

Numerous implementations exist, ranging from the browser or plugins (moz and adobe), to Apache's Batik, to right in the window manager (KDE).

I fail to see the advantages of using VML given all of this.



And ASAAKI, I don't hate MS, just Interent Explorer. I still use Windows XP over SuSE 8.0 and KDE3, despite having them installed, simply because I find it more convenient.

Amaya is W3C's web browser/editor. It really isn't browser I'd use, but I know Alex Vincent uses it to edit his pages, and does have basic SVG and MathML support.
KDE is a window manager for XFree86, typically found on *nix machines such as Linux and BSD, and not a web browser.

As for learning SVG, Adobe has a section on their website, and a quick Google search should return a bunch of useful sites. Not to mention www.w3.org 's specs on SVG are excellent resources.

Actually KDE is more than just a windowmanager,its a Desktop Enviroment ;)

I find it strange that people can hate inanimate objects. I also find it strange that people can fail to see the use of an application that is used by around 85% of all web surfers. There is definitely a lack of objective appraisal within this community.

We all know that %84 of surfers are computer newbies and just use IE because it came with their computer.They don't even know that another browser exists.
So,the fact that the majority of people use IE doesnt mean that IE is good,just that MS has a monopoly and forces people to use IE.

The mistake that all the IE loving people make is that they 15% of the people is a small amount.You have to realize that millions of people use the internet,and so that are thousands of people who use Gecko,Konqueror,Opera or Lynx.So,making your site IE-only will exclude thousands (15% of one million is already 150000) of people from visiting it,which may be a small percentage but in absolute figures its alot of visitors.
